The Thimble for Professional Tailors
You have learned your craft the hard way; puzzling together every bit of knowledge you could find. You now spend days and nights stitching your soul into a bit of cloth that deserves your craft. Does your thimble deserve your craft? I know Atlas does...
Here are 12 facts about Atlas:
1. Made by one artisan in the heart of England–The thimbles are produced by a family foundry in Newcastle. Production batches are small, with fewer than 50 thimbles.
2. Available in 5 sizes–XS, S, M, L and XL. Diameters range between 14.5mm and 20mm.
3. Designed by a tailor, not a factory–Atlas is created with you in mind, not ‘a market’. It's for long sewing hours, last minute jobs and those aching late nights where you might end up sleeping on your work bench!
4. Made in nine stages–First, CAD models are 3D printed. Then a silicone mould is made for each size. These are wax injected. Wax models are then arranged on a wax stick to resemble a tree, which gets covered with fine ceramic. The wax is melted out. The now empty ceramic mould is poured with molten silver at 893ºC. Once cooled, the thimbles are separated and mirror finished by hand.

5. Doesn't stain your fingertip–Made of sterling silver, Atlas eliminates that nasty brown or green fingertip. Silver is also hypoallergenic; almost no one is allergic to it. Besides, silver strikes the perfect balance between an excessive gold and a utilitarian stainless steel.
6. Eliminates bad sewing habits–This is ideal for students who are new to using an open-ended thimble. The upper part of Atlas cups your fingertip and prevents the thimble from sinking. Loose thimbles sink to the wider part of your finger and cause bad sewing habits.

7. Snug Fit–Its smooth inner walls ensure maximum grip. Thimbles with indents on the inside have less touch points to grip your finger. You can's sew properly with a moving thimble. A poor grip makes your finger sweat as the thimble rubs against it.

8. Corrects a bad needle and thimble technique–This is a result of 23 designs and 17 test prints in 3D. The indents rest on eight separate flat planes, disabling the use of the sides. It won’t let you sew unless you’re correctly using the front plane of your finger when pushing the needle through cloth.
9. Lasts forever–Atlas has a minimum wall thickness of 1 mm; others are 0.5 mm. Thimbles made of thin metal sheets are easily crushed. Some get holes after long use and the needle pokes through. Atlas feels robust and heavy, as you would expect from a solid 925 silver cast. Stepping on it will either damage the floor or hurt your foot!
10. Undergoes three independent quality controls–First, it's inspected by the foundry's artisan. It’s then reviewed by the International School of Tailoring and eventually sent to the Goldsmiths’ Company to be approved for hallmarking.

11. Atlas is a heritage piece–Each thimble is individually hallmarked at the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office in London to guarantee legal standards of silver purity. A full UK hallmark tells you what the piece is made of, who submitted it, where it was assayed and the year in which this happened. This makes Atlas and its owner part of a historical chain of excellent craftsmanship standards.
