Muddying the Posts

I always tend to be overly critical of my work and ideas, and am a little concerned that I'm muddying the purpose of the IST community by discussing my current projects. I'm not a tailor but am very interested in learning how it's done. Sewing is something I'm learning in order to create things my family needs or wants that either isn't available to buy or too expensive to have someone else make. I post questions and ideas here because the foundation of tailoring seems to be applicable to the things I create, which is, getting a two dimensional surface to cover a three dimensional shape in a predictable way. However, I'm not making clothes for people, I'm making clothing for chairs. 😁 That said, as we are all attending the International School of TAILORING, it's probably a good idea to keep my posts "on point."

Thanks for letting me know, and yes, I'm an outsider to tailoring but learning to sew has given me a greater appreciation for the craft. Watching your videos on tailoring and trying to incorporate some of that in my personal projects, like the boat seat "jackets," however has truly given me a greater respect for the trade.

I'm a novelist, not a tailor, but love what you're doing to support your trade and future tailors. I enjoy learning new things, particularly if it's a new skill and have no doubt you will end up in one of my books some day. 😁👍

Thanks for all you do!

Front, Back, Arms, and a Seat

I started sewing last spring. We had a lot of critters that raided our bird feeders, so I trap them, drive them out to the forest, and set them free. I had been using a towel to cover the cage during the drive but thought I could make one. Hard to believe a rectangle with an opening in the middle would be so difficult, but after three failed designs, I made one that worked. I trapped a raccoon that night and draped the cover over it so it wouldn't be exposed to the elements all night. The next morning, I found the raccoon had pulled the cover through the bars of the cage and torn the canvas fabric to pieces. That's where my sewing journey started.

I tried a couple more things, got a little better, and took on more difficult things. Over the past couple of months I've been…

There are a few videos of me releasing the things I've caught. My website is williamjdavisbooks.com.

Also, my sewing skills are really coming along. Thanks again for spending your time, effort, and resources to open this tailoring school.

Cloth Mind

I am a carpenter by trade. I have been making things from wood for 15 years. Over time, I have developed what I like to call 'wood mind'. It comes from experiencing the material over countless interactions. How will the wood bend, warp, or twist? What is the best way to cut it? What is the best way to assemble it? How well will it hold fasteners, withstand the elements, etc? With wood mind, the answers to these questions seem to arise before the question is asked, as if the wood told me.

Wood is a natural material with endless variety, which makes the space for wood mind just as endless. Each new encounter builds on the richness of those that preceded it. There is always another conversation to be had...

I have been teaching myself to sew for the past 8 years or so. Although I am aware tha…

International School of Tailoring

Ambition.

You are a creator. The one who’s responsible for the future of this world.

The designer of life and yet a humble apprentice. You’re a servant with extraordinary powers. Ambition is your fuel.

How much of it do you have? Let’s talk about ambition.

Come and join me as I tell you this old, story untold of a world once cold

With roads to be chosen and souls to be sold, rivers to be crossed and gold to be hoard

You sure won’t be bored, as I tell you this tale, as it’s your story in the greatest detail

Ambition is what me pushes forward but also what breaks me. I have the ambition to become a bespoke tailor. But is that a realistic goal to achieve???

I am a carftsman, an artisan by heart and soul. I love tailoring and I should be proud of what I have achieved so far. I wear the garments I have created with proud. It gives me more selfconfidence. It is an expression of who I am. But is it enough to builld a profession out of a hobby running out of hand???? My work gets recocnized by professional tailors but I see all these little imperfections. A Dutch tailor and tutor asked me if I realize how good I am in tailoring. I am doubting. Progress goes slow, too slow in my oppinion.... Am I impatient??? Or arrogant to even think that I am able to learn and master a craft at age 53 autodidactically??? Books don't always tell their knowlegde. Often they are silent , don't leading my hands, even confuse my mind. On the other hand, the traditional model with a selfdrafted pattern finally looks like a bespoke coat.

Still, I am at a point to break, to let my ambition go. I don't have the feeling that I will be ready to make a garment at the highest standards for a client. I had a conversation with the tailor who makes the ceremony uniforms of the Dutch Royal Household. She told me that I am doing well. She also pointed out that it will take me at least five years after learning the craft propperly , to work on my own on a client. It is not in the skills of making/sewing. It is the skill of fitting garments.

At the moment I am buisy with tousers and the fitting is what is driving me creasy. working on number 6 in a row, the fit has improved but isn't perfect. Is it the pattern or the shaping with the iron, or both??? My mind is going mad. There goes my ambition. I am disapointed about myself, my skills, my ability to fix the problems. It paralyses me. the mountains of fabrics in my stash screaming at me, shouting at me to get started again. They want to be transformt into a garment as beautiful as possible, as they deserve. They want to comfort me, but I am stucked....

What about the enviroment you are living in as an aspiring tailor? The Dutch seem to have little appreciashion for tailoring. This is a factor that can turn your ambitions down also.

However, I hope by tomorrow I will gain back my ambition and my selfconfidence to pick up a piece of cloth and transfrom it into a wearable garment. The best garment I have made so far. I will make a humble start again, enjoying the process of creating with my hands. I keep pushing my standards taking into account not to overstrain myself (that's hard). And even if my ambition to become a bespoke tailor is too far fetshed, I will end up the best dressed man in Rotterdam!

Sorry to bother you with this. Have patience with me!

Thank you Reza and Mouwgli for all you efforts!!

Best, Martin
